Talks: Maike Hansen & Willem Velema

11.09.2026 13:30 Helmholtz Institute Würzburg, Josef-Schneider-Str. 2/D15, 97080 Würzburg, Germany

We are pleased to announce Maike Hansen and Willem Velema (Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands) as speakers on Friday, September 11 at 13:30 (medicine campus, building D15, room 01.002-004).

The Hansen lab studies gene expression dynamics and investigates how cells achieve reliable outcomes despite molecular noise and cellular complexity. Using approaches at the interface of quantitative single-cell biology, cell-free biochemistry, and computational modelling, the lab aims to uncover the principles that govern robust cell-state transitions. Maike Hansen’s talk is titled “Balancing noise and stability: How RNA processing shapes cell-state transitions”.

The Velema lab applies chemical biology approaches to better understand bacterial resistance at the molecular level, with a particular focus on the roles of RNA and DNA. By developing small-molecule probes and studying nucleic acid biology in living systems, the lab seeks new ways to interfere with resistance mechanisms. Willem Velema’s talk is titled “Bacterial RNA Targeting”.
