From Fusobacteria to gene scissors

HZI Paper of the Month Award for Falk Ponath and Elena Vialetto

Award-winning publications: Falk Ponath, postdoc at the Helmholtz Institute Würzburg (HIRI), and Elena Vialetto, former HIRI PhD student, have each received a Paper of the Month Award from the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig.

In the publication “A target expression threshold dictates invader defense and prevents autoimmunity by CRISPR-Cas13,” Elena Vialetto and an international team of researchers described a new control mechanism exhibited by CRISPR-Cas13 systems. The study was published in Cell Host & Microbe in August 2022.

Falk Ponath, together with colleagues from Würzburg, has developed new genetic tools to unravel the molecular strategies of Fusobacteria. The paper “Expanding the genetic toolkit helps dissect a global stress response in the early-branching species Fusobacterium nucleatum” was released in PNAS in September 2022.
