Where Science Meets Culture

Vogel Foundation Dr Eckernkamp celebrates its 25th anniversary

How much does cutting-edge research rely on culture? HIRI director Jörg Vogel explored this question on March 8, 2025, on the stage of the designated Würzburg State Theater. The Vogel Foundation Dr Eckernkamp celebrated its 25th anniversary with a festive gala on the premises.

In his address, Jörg Vogel emphasized how important theaters, museums and other cultural offerings in Würzburg are for cutting-edge research: “Scientists who come to our institute from all over the world expect an excellent infrastructure—not just for their work in the laboratory, but also for their leisure activities.”

Director Vogel and Britta Grigull, Head of Administration at the HIRI, expressed their gratitude to Chairman of the Board Gunther Schunk for the generous support the Helmholtz Institute receives through the foundation's activities. Since 2018, the non-profit organization has been promoting cutting-edge research at the HIRI through its Dr Eckernkamp Fellowship Program. To date, three doctoral students have received funding for their scientific work, with a total of 165,000 euros awarded.
