At the Interface of Science and Organization
3 Questions for Volunteer Yara
Since August 2025, Yara has been completing a “Voluntary Social Year in Science (FSJ)” at the Helmholtz Institute Würzburg (HIRI). At HIRI, she supports administrative and communication activities, gaining firsthand insight into the management of research within a young international institute.
In our series “3 Questions for…”, Yara explains why she chose to do a voluntary social year at the interface of science and organization, which tasks she finds particularly exciting, and what advice she would give to others considering becoming a volunteer.
Why did you decide to do a voluntary social year at HIRI, and was it the right decision?
During my final years at school, I realized that after graduating, I needed a break from traditional learning—especially from the stress of exams. At the same time, I wasn’t yet sure which path I wanted to pursue. A voluntary social year, or FSJ for short, seemed like a great opportunity to gain time, explore my options, and develop personally.
However, the traditional FSJ in healthcare or childcare never really appealed to me. So, I specifically looked for something that better matched my interests. By chance, I came across HIRI—and the combination of science, organization, and the opportunity to gain insight into a large research network like the Helmholtz Association immediately convinced me.
Now, shortly before the end of my FSJ, I can say: it was exactly the right decision. I received a very warm welcome, felt like part of the team from the very beginning, and learned things I never would have otherwise. Through my work—whether on the computer using new programs or in exchanges with colleagues—I’ve not only learned a lot but also discovered my strengths and what truly inspires me.
What does your daily work look like, and what do you enjoy most about it?
My daily work at HIRI is very diverse. Of course, there are tasks that come up regularly, but no two days are really the same. New, spontaneous tasks keep things interesting and ensure that the work never becomes monotonous.
What I particularly appreciate is the freedom I have here—both in how I structure my workday and in choosing the areas in which I’d like to contribute. As a volunteer, you’re not limited to just one field, such as communications. Depending on your interests, you can also explore the laboratory, technical operations, and IT.
What I enjoy most is the combination of variety, responsibility, and team spirit. I truly feel included and taken seriously. The trust that is placed in me motivates me every single day.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?
I would recommend becoming a volunteer to anyone. At first, I was slightly worried about “falling behind,” since many of my classmates went straight into university or vocational training. Today, I know those concerns were completely unfounded.
The voluntary social year at HIRI gave me the chance to get to know myself better, discover my strengths, grow beyond my comfort zone, and figure out what really matters to me for my future. Along the way, I learned an incredible amount at HIRI—both professionally and personally—and gained insights that you don’t get everywhere. I also met many wonderful people and developed an initial sense of what working life is like.
So, if you’re still unsure about which direction to take, or if you simply want to experience something different from school, an FSJ—especially at HIRI—could be exactly the right decision.
