Decisions in Infectious Diseases
HIRI was well represented at the first DECIDE symposium in Würzburg
From March 22 to 24, the first international symposium of the Collaborative Research Center “DECisions in Infectious DisEases” (DECIDE) took place in Würzburg. The event brought together leading experts from around the world. Through lectures, networking opportunities, and poster presentations, the symposium explored current challenges, new research findings, and future perspectives in infectious disease research.
The Helmholtz Institute Würzburg (HIRI) was represented throughout the symposium in both an organizational and scientific capacity. Fergal Hamrock, a postdoc in Franziska Faber’s laboratory, which is associated with HIRI, served as chair of the first session. Alexander Westermann, a scientist affiliated with HIRI, led the fourth session on “Advanced Infection Models & Technologies.” Franziska Faber and Nahyung Ko, a doctoral student in Alexander Westermann’s laboratory, moderated the fifth session on the topic of “Microbiome.”
HIRI also presented its own scientific contributions: On the first day of the event, group leader Camilla Ciolli Mattioli presented her research, and HIRI director Jörg Vogel delivered the final scientific presentation of the symposium, closing the session on “Host-Directed Therapies & Anti-Infectives.”
Additionally, HIRI had a strong presence at the poster presentations on Sunday and Monday, with many researchers sharing their current projects.

About the Collaborative Research Centre DECIDE
The Collaborative Research Centre DECIDE aims to identify molecular mechanisms within the host that control the course of infectious diseases. In particular, we analyze three key decisions, which determine the clinical outcome of human infections.
