Scientific Advisory Board Meets at the Helmholtz Institute Würzburg

Two days of intensive scientific exchange

On February 10 and 11, the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the Helmholtz Institute Würzburg (HIRI) convened in Würzburg for its regular meeting. The two-day event focused on reviewing the scientific orientation and performance of the institute. On this basis, the board members prepared recommendations for the strategic further development of HIRI, a site of the Braunschweig Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in cooperation with the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU).

First, HIRI Director Jörg Vogel and HZI Director Josef Penninger gave short introductory presentations. Afterwards, the associated and alumni group leaders Mathias Munschauer, Redmond Smyth, Lars Barquist, Neva Caliskan, Alexander Westermann, and Chase Beisel provided insights into their successful scientific careers at HIRI and their continuation after they left the institute.

Jörg Vogel, Emmanuel Saliba, Franziska Faber, and Jens Hör presented their current research projects and developments. New group leader Camilla Ciolli Mattioli introduced her recently launched group and her research plans for the future. The program was complemented by contributions from JMU President Paul Pauli and opportunities for networking and intensive discussion—including sessions with postdocs and doctoral students from the institute.

The Scientific Advisory Board

The internationally composed SAB plays a central role in ensuring the quality of research at HIRI. As an independent panel of experts, it advises the institute on scientific matters and supports its long-term development. Board members are appointed for four-year terms and are among the leading experts in the field of RNA-based infection research.
