Productive internship in Glasgow

An experience report by Brent Cuveele (PhD student at the University of Regensburg)

“With the support of RNAmed, I was able to fulfill a long-standing scientific wish and significantly advance my research project.

While working on my research project studying the role of RNA-modifying enzymes, we realized early on that these enzymes have strong potential to alter and potentially limit viral progression. To better understand these modifying enzymes in the context of viral infection, we contacted the research group of Dr. Alfredo Castello at the Centre for Virus Research (CVR) in Glasgow in the United Kingdom, which works at the forefront of investigating the fundamental biology of viruses.

I always wanted to learn how to handle, study, and safely conduct virus-based experiments. This is where RNAmed was able to provide me with the support I needed to begin an international internship and plan a three-month research stay at the CVR. During this time, I gained hands-on experience working in category 2 biosafety laboratories and performing cutting-edge experiments that would not have been accessible to me at my home institution.

Besides the new scientific training, this internship also got me in contact with an amazing group of people and greatly expanded my scientific network for the future. The friends I made in the Castello group gave me a very warm welcome. I specifically want to thank Vincenzo Ruscica, who patiently introduced me to all the new laboratory techniques and also showed me around the vibrant city of Glasgow.

Besides the exciting work, there was also time to discover the great things Scotland has to offer. I was able to hike through the stunning Scottish Highlands and enjoy time with colleagues, sharing conversations over a pint in a traditional pub.

In the end, I will always look back fondly on this exceptional internship experience made possible by RNAmed. I strongly encourage other students to pursue their own international research experiences and scientific adventures. Because for me, it truly was a dream come true.”
