Prof Katharina Schaufler has taken over the Department of Epidemiology and Ecology of Antimicrobial Resistance at HIOH.

On 28 July 2023, Prof. Dr. Katharina Schaufler was appointed by the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs and took over the Department of Epidemiology and Ecology of Antimicrobial Resistance at HIOH on 01 August 2023.

Katharina Schaufler is an outstanding scientist in the highly relevant field of antimicrobial resistance, with numerous publications in renowned journals. Her research involves a holistic One Health approach as well as state-of-the-art bioinformatics approaches at the genome and transcriptome level with phenotyping and molecular biology methods to advance the establishment of comprehensive and novel surveillance and therapeutic strategies. Her goal is to ultimately combat the spread of pathogens in a more targeted and effective manner.

Katharina Schaufler received two doctorates (veterinary medicine and PhD) summa cum laude from the Free University of Berlin and is a specialist veterinarian in microbiology. Various research stays led her, among others, to Harvard Medical School in Boston (USA). In January 2019, she became Junior Professor of Pharmaceutical Microbiology at the University of Greifswald, where she took over the leadership of the junior research group "DISPATch_MRGN" from November 2021. From May 2021 on, Katharina Schaufler was Professor of Medical Microbiology at Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. The Helmholtz Institute for One Health is very pleased that Katharina Schaufler has taken over the leadership of the Department of Epidemiology and Ecology of Antimicrobial Resistance since August 2023. At the same time, she received her professorship at the University of Greifswald.
